Also, since most shrines involve climbing many steps, make sure you save your energy! Visiting in the winter is beautiful, but the high elevation wind can be biting!.

Kanahebisuijinja Shrine: Seeking Fortune (and Gold Dust Curry!)

Location: 118 Ichinomae, Sannomine, Iwanuma, Miyagi 989-2464, Japan.

Best Time to Visit: 10 AM – 11 AM (Great for trying the limited-edition naan curry!).

Fact: This shrine is famous for attracting wealth, with a local tradition suggesting that rubbing a wallet against the serpentine rock (serpentine stone) on the grounds will boost your financial luck.

After picking up our rental car at Sendai Airport, the very first stop on our journey of Touring Various Shrines and Temples in Sendai City was Kanahebisuijinja, the holy ground for money luck!.

It’s only about 13 km from the airport, and I was absolutely dying to try the limited ‘Fortune-Invoking Gold Snake Naan Curry’ during the New Year period.

Fact: This is a National Treasure shrine built by Date Masamune, showcasing the pinnacle of opulent Momoyama architecture. The artistic blend of black lacquer and gold leaf decoration is stunning, and it is the birthplace of Sendai’s famous amulet doll, the ‘Matsukawa Daruma.’.

As soon as I stepped into Osaki Hachiman-gu, designated a National Treasure, the majestic atmosphere of the ‘Nagatoko’ and the dazzling main hall overwhelmed me.

The grounds were filled with the famous blue ‘Matsukawa Daruma’ dolls of Sendai, whose impressive feature is that their eyes are already drawn on when you buy them!.

Coincidentally, when I visited, the local soccer team, Vegalta Sendai, was holding a pre-season victory prayer ceremony, so the crowd was enormous!.

It was quite an interesting spectacle watching the team mascots, Vegatta and Rutana, appear in suits to pray alongside the fans.
